This post written by Emily.

Madrid is a cosmopolitan city with a wide variety of attractions, from art and culture in Madrid’s finest museums to shopping in the trendiest boutiques in Spain. It has been described as Spain’s New York City (and even has its own version of Central Park – Retiro Park). Madrid will certainly not disappoint when it comes to keeping you entertained no matter what your taste may be. This city has something to offer everyone and here are my top things to do while in Madrid.

Eat out

There are hundreds of fabulous restaurants in Madrid to choose from but I would definitely recommend trying out the Botin restaurant – claimed to be the oldest restaurant in the world according to the Guinness book of records. Dating back to 1725 the Botin is a traditional restaurant offering Mediterranean cuisine and is still a local’s favourite simply for the excellent food.

Be Entertained

It may be controversial but there is no denying that bullfighting is one of the most traditional Spanish entertainments. If you’re hoping to catch a show then look no further than Las Ventas, Madrid’s main bullring. Or go the whole hog and visit the world famous San Isidro festival in May/June where fights last all day for 3 weeks!

If this isn’t for you then why not try the Corral flamenco show. This show was listed in the New York Times “1000 Places To See Before You Die” and is a fantastic way to experience the true culture of Madrid. The Casa Patas is another great flamenco show, known for its high class quality it attracts many locals. Most shows offer drinks and tapas for you to enjoy while watching, making the perfect evening out.

Visit a Museum

If art is your thing then a visit to The Prado Museum is a must. The Prado is perhaps most famous for maintaining the art collection of Fernando VII and other royals from the 12th to the 19th century. But it is also home to over 8,600 paintings, not to mention the sculptures, drawings, coins and other works of arts that are exhibited in the grand building.

The Goya Museum is known for a slightly different reason. The renowned Spanish artist Francisco de Goya was commissioned to decorate the chapel before he died in 1828. Today the museum-pantheon stands in memory of the painter where his tomb lies. A sinister fact is that Goy’s head is missing, and presumed stolen!

Go Shopping

Madrid has some great traditional Spanish flea markets. If you are in search of a bargain then head for the famous Rasto Market and you won’t be let down (open Sunday mornings). Or if your taste is a little more expensive then the Salamanca district, around Calle Serrano, is the place for you with designer names such as Armani, Chanel and Versace.

Sight See

Visit the Royal Palace (or Palacio Real as it is know in Spain). This monumental building is one of Madrids top tourist attractions. Built in the 18th and 19th centuries it was the official residence of the Royal family, but now it is only used for particular state ceremonies. A number of important artworks by artists such as Caravaggio and Tiepolo adorn the walls, visitors can also expect to see 13th century weapons and tapestry collections. This fantastic building is a must see while visiting Madrid.

An attraction that you might not actually expect to find in Madrid is the Templo de Debod – an authentic Egyptian temple! The monument was in danger of being destroyed due to the construction of the Aswan Dam so the Egyptian government donated the temple to Spain in 1968. Carefully deconstructed, transported and then reconstructed in Madrid, it now stands in its entire original glory a far cry from its origin in 4 thousand BC, in the Nile Valley of Egypt.
