Copenhagen had gained quite a reputation as an international jazz capital in the 1960s and 70s after a number of American jazz musicians made their new home in Denmark. Jazz Musicians the likes of Dexter Gordon, Ben Webster and Thad Jones were performing alongside Danish jazz musicians on the growing Copenhagen jazz scene. They installed a huge influence on the Danish Jazz music community in that they helped to promote a profusion of Danish jazz musicians, Danish music venues and live jazz festivals.
Copenhagen continues to be one of Europe’s leading cities for jazz and has become a Mecca for jazz lovers from all over the world. Of Copenhagen’s popular jazz performance venues, the two with the most notoriety are Copenhagen Jazzhouse which offers a combination of classic and modern jazz and the legendary Jazzhus Montmartre. U.K. jazz aficionados have been known to take weekend flights to Denmark to partake.
Copenhagen’s Concert Hall, opened in 2009, the Koncerthuset, is located in the Orestad North area. The opening of this new Concert Hall brings the long awaited arrival of a musical venue of high international standard not to mention a new architectural landmark for the capital city of Denmark.
Architect Jean Nouvel’s building puts Copenhagen on equal footing with other cities around the world by providing the best in modern acoustics and a unique visual venue for concert goers. Events in the four individual halls, will range from jazz concerts and chamber music to choral, rock and pop concerts in addition to large symphony concerts.
